How to create a professional looking certificate? Browse our impressive database of great looking certificate templates and find the perfect one! There are many misconceptions about Certificates of Insurance (COIs). This article explains exactly what they are and why you need them.
A COI is a document used to prove insurance coverage. A certificate is a photo that provides verification of insurance coverage currently in effect and typically includes coverage, limits, policy term, policy number, and carrier name, among other information.
The COI most often required is an AKORD 25 designed to prove liability insurance (general liability, auto liability, workers’ compensation, etc.). Accord 27 or 28 describes property insurance in a little more detail. ACORD stands for Association for Cooperative Operations Research and Development and provides standards for the global insurance industry. Their approved insurance certificates are often used to formulate policy details.
A COI is usually required to win contracts. With a COI, the party is assured that you have coverage in case something goes wrong. Some common situations where you need to provide proof of insurance are:

So what does COI actually look like? We have prepared an example to show you the main points:
When requesting a COI, you must list the coverage you are seeking proof of and the full legal name and address of any additional insured or entity requesting a waiver of subrogation status. Entities that require additional insurance status often have specific language requirements for the COI, so be sure to include those if applicable.
For example: disclaimer of subrogation, principal and no-payment provisions, 30-day notice of cancellation, indemnifier/creditor damages. If the entity requesting proof of coverage provides any sample COIs or specific insurance requirements, it is always a good idea to send them along with your request.
The Certificate of Insurance is not an insurance policy and does not act to provide, confirm, extend or modify the terms of the insurance policy in any way. It does not constitute a contract between the issuing insurer, authorized representative or manufacturer and the certificate holder. You should never edit a COI. Always request a new one from your agent or broker if an endorsement or additional coverage has been added during the policy term.
