AT&T offers three insurance plans for its phones with monthly rates. For $8.99 a month, credited to your regular AT&T account, you can insure a phone or tablet against “loss, theft, physical or liquid damage.” It also covers illegal activities abroad. AT&T says a replacement can be shipped the same day a claim is filed, though it may take longer. You’ll have to pay a deductible for each claim (rates vary by employer), but those fees will drop by about 50% if you don’t file a claim for six months or perhaps longer. You are allowed two claims per 12 months, with a maximum value per claim of $1,500.

If you pay $15 a month for Protect Advantage, you get everything on the cheapest plan, including free access to hardware repairs and streaming support. It also comes with free cloud storage with the AT&T Photo Storage app and a photo saver. Finally, there’s a $40-a-month plan, which covers up to four smartphones, tablets, and laptops. There is identity protection and you can make up to eight claims over 12 months. AT&T also offers a Preventive Maintenance Plan with a $29 to $49 deductible and a one-year warranty.

Verizon offers what it calls Mobile Protect for apps. Basic phones and tablets are covered for $12/mo, and smartphones are $17/mo. Verizon also offers multi-line Mobile Protect for $50 per month, which covers three lines on one account, and you can add more lines for $11 per month per new line, up to seven more lines.

Mobile Protect and its Multi-Device version replace with a new device, or one certified “like new”, that will be shipped to the customer the next day. You will have access to the company’s Tech Coach support service. The plan also includes a $29 screen repair.

If you want to get your phone from T-Mobile, the carrier has its own Device Protection plan. Depending on your phone, the cost is between $6 and $14 per month. If your phone experiences a mechanical failure, T-Mobile Device Protection covers all costs with no deductible. Accidental damage, loss or theft of the phone has a deductible ranging from $10 to $249. Total closing value is $1,200.

T-Mobile has something called Protection 360. It costs between $7 and $15 a month, and offers everything in the Basic Protection plan, plus a few extras. Includes McAfee Security software and anti-theft services and support from Tech Ph.D. by Assurant. You get access to all AppleCare services for free. Finally, it offers unlimited screen saver settings for your phone if you buy the screen at a T-Mobile store and one of the store’s support staff asks for it.

America’s fourth-largest auto operator says it beats standard cell phone insurance with its Device Protection Plus plans. The average price is $9.99 per month and provides replacement phones in case of loss, theft, damage or mechanical failure, with deductibles ranging from $50 to $175. Your replacement phone will be available the next business day and you’ll keep your protection after the manufacturer’s warranty expires. The advanced plan costs $12.99 per month and offers various lost phone charges, but accident charges are reduced to $50 or $99. The cost to repair a broken screen will also drop to just $29. You can sign up for Device Protection Plus with AppleCare if you have an iPhone for $15.99.

US Cellular’s plans aren’t all that different from their competitors, though we like the credit check feature in case someone steals your phone and finds financial information on it.
